It can be your greatest asset or your worse nemesis. It can keep you alert, motivated and agile during your ascent to achieve your goals or it can slow you down, cause you to make gaping errors of judgement and keep you from achieving your highest potential.
You know what I’m talking about. I’m talking about your general day to day mind-set. The thoughts you trust as your personal guide and which create your normal modes of behaviour. How you react to both the positive (or at least what we term positive and pleasurable) or negative (or at least what we term negative, challenging or painful) events in your daily life.
“Your success or lack thereof is directly proportional to how you’ve trained your brain to deal with adversity.” DJK
“When the going gets tough the tough get going!” Your inner voice might be telling you or maybe it’s saying, “When I get knocked down I must leap back up again!” Perhaps your self talk goes into victim mode and plays a thought loop like… “Why can’t I get a break?” What’s the point of all of this?” or “Who am I to think I deserve to have a great life?”
As you notice the first quoted statements are positive, re-affirming and connote ACTION and movement on your behalf. They are commanding you to toughen up, get up and face your fears while the latter are actually thought provoking leaning questions which often arise out of an assumed negative event.
Our minds have been conditioned over time through constant input from our parents, teachers, peer groups and personal experiences. We’ve been blessed with an amazing recording devise which loves to play back all previously recorded childhood memories without much regard to the quality or truth of the information received.
Luckily we’ve developed a higher brain in our neo-cortex which has the ability to discern information and for what we can tell also has the ability to connect to the higher wavelengths of a universal thought and energy. It can bring wisdom and opacity into our reality when we allow it to. The lower brain responds and reacts while the higher mind has the ability to imagine, create and plug into all the current and past thoughts that are vibrating throughout the universe.
I’m of course speaking of something that hasn’t yet been proven although many great achievers from science, mathematics, art and literature have attributed their greatest insights and discoveries to “thought events” outside of their normal conscious thoughts. Many have made reference to lucid dreams or their ability to receive breakthrough thoughts during meditation or flashes of insights that came while they were engaged in a completely unrelated activity.
Each one of us has the ability to tap into this powerhouse of wisdom and mental enlightenment, all we have to do is believe in it’s power and re-train our brain to be more aware of our minds ability to receive positive, intelligent, life altering insights.
How can we do this? We can start by paying attention to our habits of thinking and habits of reacting to events deemed either positive or negative by our previously conditioned brain. Once we’re aware of our habitual way of thinking and reacting we can begin to relax to these fixed reactions and conditioned thoughts. By becoming aware of our conditioned thinking we can begin to catch our brain “off guard” and slip in a new thought or new belief. The more we can practice this type of present moment awareness the more we can tap into the universal thought energy and begin to alter our traditional mind-set.
You might want to practice on your own at first and if you feel you’re making progress then step up the pace. If this doesn’t seem to be working for you then you could get a coach or join a meditation group. Learning to meditate will undoubtedly help but what I’m talking about is the ability to meditate full time, be aware full time. The ability to change how your brain accepts and rejects information is as simple as learning to pay attention and be fully engaged in your day to day activities.
We all can do this if we want to bad enough. So changing your mind-set for the better, for your personal growth and professional improvement is down to you.
Why not give it a go?
