Why do Managers Treat People as Expendable?

It never ceases to amaze me why people in potentially empowering positions misuse their titles and treat their own staff as expendable. What’s even more amazing to me is that their behaviour is often left unchecked by senior executives.

This type of behaviour has been around since the dawn of man and will persist I’m sure until mankind matures. However, there’s really no excuse for managers to treat those in their circle of influence with such disrespect.

No one should ever be made to “feel” inferior and of course the empowering words of Eleanor Roosevelt “no one can make you feel inferior without your consent” might not be top of mind for the unawares employee.

In the real world most people are doing their best with what they know how to do. If they are struggling to perform or not getting a result it is more than likely to do with lack of skill or lack of will. Lack of skill can be taught or supported by a more skilled employee, if it’s lack of will then in most cases a bit of coaching and some good old fashioned concern might just do the trick.

So, wielding your position and showing your powerful stance that they can be replaced does not get the long term ongoing results we all strive for.

Tips to stay on track and not be tempted to be cruel as a habit of motivating.

  1. Ask more questions, play the role of a concerned, loving parent.
  2. Show concern about lack of performance and ask if there’s something personal affecting their work.
  3. Ask if there’s anything you can do to help in the current situation.
  4. Ask where they want to be if everything was perfect when they wake up tomorrow.
  5. Let them know that you trust and believe in them and remind them of all the great accomplishments they’ve already achieved.

Lastly and most importantly, if you have someone in your organization that you know is treating your employees with dis-respect then you have a responsibility to address this individual immediately. I’m sure they do a great job getting the short-term results you strive for but I’m also 100% sure they are compromising the long-term survival of your organization.

A professionally trained coach can help them to develop their people skills. Failing this another option would be to show them that in fact people are expendable and get rid of them.

Then you can watch your productivity soar.
