Making Changes

The modern world is constantly in flux, always changing if not drastically then in a more ebb and flow. As the seasons go from one state to another we’re forced to make allowances and if we don’t make these allowances or prepare for them then we could easily be left out in the cold. And in freezing temperatures it could quickly be life altering. Businesses and careers often follow the same law.

Technological advances can make both people and previous products or services useless seemingly overnight. Wikipedia supplants Encyclopedia’s or Google search kills the Yellow Pages. Sudden trends can pave the way for new products and services that end up becoming ubiquitous in our culture. Social Media anyone?

With all of this fast change getting faster and our human psychology remaining pretty much unchanged over the last millennia it’s only natural that we find it hard to make sudden changes in our lives and careers. We resist change in order to feel secure about our current life and our unforeseeable future. One of the things we have a hard time understanding, however, is what our future self really wants. We often have a difficult time understanding that our priorities will be different. What we value will also alter based on our future priorities.

Your skill that you’ve spent half of your life developing might not be of value to a fast approaching future society. Software and automation will certainly be able to do most of the mundane, rote tasks like cashiering or customer service questions like “where’s the cheese? “see isle 9 please” that Walmart is trying hard to phase in.

No sick days, no unions, no mood swings and no talk back in the name of efficiency and the bottom line all of these jobs that can be eliminated will be eliminated.

I think we all feel this career angst to a certain extent. Even those working in IT can feel the surge when a new fancy  programming language starts taking the coder world by storm.

What can you do in order to feel safer and more secure in our ever changing world? In the often quoted words of Ghandi…

“Be the change you wish to make in the world” and in case you might want to learn how to enjoy and embrace change, you can start by having a look at the formula for change HERE.

Remember how our mind works, we tend to view change that we decide and make on our own accord as “positive change” because… well, it was our damn decision and energy that made it happen, Right!; while we tend to view change that is put upon us either by surprise or force as “negative change” and we often choose to play the victim in these situations.

Obviously not a healthy way to go, however, if we view this type of change as thrilling and fun because it allows us to experience a new reality and move in an new direction then we’re on the right path to getting some new momentum in our lives. Why not embrace Change as our exciting and fun uncertainty because it certainly is our only certainty?
