Why Social Rules?

Post by Dominic Kotarski.

I had to Get Out from behind my screen and meet some real people to show me how to be more effective behind my screen. As it turns out, I had no clue what I was doing on social media. Thank goodness I was set somewhat straight by Vicki McLeod at Main Street Communications.

I learned an amazing amount of information about Facebook and how to use it much more effectively than I had been to help spread the word about my business. As it turns out I wasn’t being truly social enough because I wasn’t really serving and sharing in the right manner. As well, I could become much more strategic with my time and content.

Vicki runs both solo and with a pack of duly named Social Chicks here in Lovely Maple Ridge, just East of Vancouver, B.C.

My experience reminded me, as I get busy with my business, the importance of attending more educational seminars and classes. In order to truly serve to the best of my abilty I must continue to improve and hone my business and communication skills. It’s so easy to get into a silo and work solely on your own projects and with your own team of people that you forget or neglect to get more social with your local community of business people and partners.

As it turns out I was mistaken for a British bald guy named John (although that’s my middle name) who is the owner operator of Blenz coffee here in Maple Ridge. Which I might add serves a much nicer coffee than Starbucks.  I was also sitting at the same table as Roxanne Hooper who just happens to be the assistant editor of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows Times community Newspaper .

And as luck or synchro-destiny (a book and phrase coined by Deepak Chopra) or both would have it, I just happened to have a copy of my latest/first publication “The Making” – A Young American’s Search for Riches in the Land Downunder with me when I introduced myself to the awesome group. Roxanne graciously threw  me her business card and said we could meet up for a short article and promotion of my book and a bit about my story in her newspaper.

How awesome is that? See, being physically present at “Social Events” works too 🙂

As you read this post I’m off to Melbourne Australia to connect with a long lost (now found) friend and business colleague Harvey Pogrund (CEO of Hannah Direct).  Australia is where my story takes place nearly 27 years ago. I had just graduated University in my home town of Chattanooga, Tennessee and didn’t have a clue what I wanted to do. I was only certain about one thing and one thing only. I was going to leave Tennessee and travel to Australia and stay away from home for as long as I could. I knew I needed to find some work in order to prolong my trip and deep down I was hoping to find an opportunity to succeed. Once again I was lucky enough to find both and my life was forever altered from that original decision.

Harvey read my manuscript and bought the first 100 copies printed of my book. He has asked me to share my experiences with his sales team in Sydney at his annual Leadership Conference and then we will fly to his locations in Melbourne, Brisbane and Auckland, New Zealand (Where I originally set up my first sales office).  I was a young 23 year old punk with lots’ of enthusiasm, dreams and guts. Somehow everything worked out from my original plan. I haven’t lived in my hometown since I set sail 27 years ago.

What are you doing to connect with new people, old colleagues and trusted friends? The world works in mysterious ways if you keep pushing the envelope and putting yourself out there to grow, learn and connect.

Don’t sit back on your laurels, take advantage of the massive connection economy both behind your screen and your local scene and build your own synchro-destiny. Keep working towards your dreams and they will surely come. Let’s start now and keep the conversation flowing in the comment boxes way below this post or better yet why not sign up for my weekly blog HERE and I’ll deliver it to your inbox once a week on a Tuesday.

And now you know my new social rules and why I think Social Rules!

Sincerely,

Dominic Kotarski author of “The Making” and Founder of Sales Success Academy
