Are you a Professional?

Before you answer that question you should first consider whether or not you can claim to be a master of your craft.

  • Do you know the basics of your profession and industry inside out and upside down?
  • Do you know how the parts fit together to make a working whole?
  • Have you put in your minimum of 10,000 hours of focused effort applying your craft? That would represent anywhere from 7-10 years of your life.

When you can answer a resounding “YES!” to the those questions then you can consider yourself a professional in your field. Once you’re able to call yourself a professional then you can start listing all the things that make up a professional’s life.

  • Do you have a sterling reputation in your industry?
  • Do your clients refer you to other business associates?

If not, then it could be that they don’t want to refer you for the simple reason they don’t want to lose you as their trusted advisor. Or they don’t want you to spread yourself too thin and not be able to continue to provide the second to none service you’re providing them at the moment.

Assuming the ladder is the case then you should consider expanding your business in ways that leverage more of your brand. You can create add on services by hand selecting experts in areas that would greatly benefit your client. If you’re a sales expert than why not find the best known marketer in your area and get them involved with your business by creating a program in conjunction with them and then offering your client explicit access to your new unbeatable program.

In any case, once you’ve proven yourself as a true professional and are in great demand by your clients. They are referring you but with the proviso, “you must stay loyal to us, and keep providing us with your high quality work” then you’ll know you’re a true professional. And when you’re at the top of your game then you will live by the credo “A professional does their best work even when they don’t feel like it.”

For those that aspire to reach the “Pro” status keep learning, growing and applying your talent, energy, care, focus, passion, intelligence to your craft and in time the doors will inevitably open for you.
