3 Reasons why people fail

1: Because they quit.

“80% of success is showing up” Woody Allen

How often people fail simply because they don’t show up for their commitments, this is true across the board for everyone. I’m sure Woody said this on the set one day when some of his actors didn’t show up. But this also speaks volumes in the sense that the simple act of showing up and being ready and present is probably one of the biggest things you can do to succeed in your business.

So many people get frustrated and call in sick. Not when it’s easy but when they are struggling. It’s so important to have perspective in these situations. I very rarely in my career had team members decide to quit after they’ve had a brilliant day.  When they made money and people were buying their products they came back to gloat and couldn’t wait for the next day so they could experience even more money and success.             Unashamedly going for likes here 🙂               [arrows style=”arrow-8-1.png” align=”right”]

“You only learn in defeat, when you win you just tend to celebrate.”

Tigers 18- Indians 0. When I was playing little league baseball I remember riding back home with my most loyal fan Granddad. I was extremely upset about our team’s terrible loss and even worse performance. I struck out each time at bat and had completely embarrassed myself as well as my Dad (Our Team’s Coach) after being put on as a relief pitcher and tossing my first pitch right over the top of the backstop. It just doesn’t get any worse than that. Of course, the Tigers were pretty intimidated after showing them my wild arm but that was no consolation to my embarrassment and our total carnage.

I told my granddad on that day I had had enough and was quitting. He gracefully heard me out and then mentioned that you never should quit anything in life. Just master it and move on.

These words never left me and I’ve endeavored to use them as my guide whenever I feel overwhelmed.  Think about the power of my Granddads philosophy.

“Never quit anything master it and move on”. Jack Meagher.

First, you have to master your own sales ability. Get consistent results and prove to yourself that you can do it before taking on the challenge of teaching, coaching, training or managing others in that realm.

Your success is reached because you fight through the tough times; learn and grow from your interactions. You decide to show up even when you don’t feel like it. You decide to show up when you’re feeling a bit under the weather and you remind yourself that these are the essential days towards mastery of your profession. These are the personal commitments that will ultimately set you apart from the other 80% of people that are simply looking for the easy path to success. They are looking for the perfect day the perfect job the perfect circumstances. There simply is no such thing as “Perfect” in our world.  So the best strategy is to just make the decision and commitment to show up, be present and put your energy on the task at hand.

I’ve had some of my most successful days in the field when I felt sick or had the flu. I didn’t have the same passion or enthusiasm for my interactions but I was there with my product and service and went through the right pitch and they liked my offering and whaola! I made money and felt much better at the end of my day.

I can’t tell you how many times I had a sore throat or a runny nose in the early morning. Had just enough energy to get out of bed and into the office. Take a few aspirin or antihistamines then off into the field dealing with customers training my team only to take a break halfway through the day and say to myself, “Boy… I’m so glad I got up and forced myself to go out into the world today. I feel great now.”

Whereas so many of my friends and colleagues never thought twice about simply calling in sick or just not show up for work only to deal with the consequences later.

The consequences are, you’re not someone to be counted on and worst of all you know that you easily throw in the towel or give up just because of a little cold or flu. This can become a habit and before you know it you lose your success mindset and fall easily into the normal 80% mindset of those that just don’t reach their full potential.

2) Because they lose sight of their goals or get overwhelmed by them.

When we set our goals often times we do it logically. What we think we want to do or accomplish instead of thinking of them emotionally. Why am I motivated to accomplish my goals? There are so many studies out there that have come to the conclusion that most people don’t have clear concise goals and those that do have clear goals don’t normally write them down and commit to them. These studies show that only 10% of people have clearly defined goals in life and of that 10 % only 2% actually put these goals down on paper.

These studies have also proven that those that do write them down and make a firm commitment are ultimately more successful not just in hitting their goals that they wrote down and committed to but also in the financial sense. They have and make more money than the remaining 98%. This shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone because it makes logical sense.

How can we build anything physical in this world without a blueprint? How can you expect to build a successful career or business without actually writing down and committing to your goals? Well, you would be surprised. I know I was.

So many people I meet are completely amazed that I have all my goal sheets since 1995. This was the year that I finally began to follow my own advice. I had been encouraging my team to do it all those years but never had any personal proof that it works. This simple yearly ritual was a huge turning point on my journey towards becoming financially independent. This is why I would encourage you to do the same. 2014 is just beginning so if you haven’t yet written down your goals and intentions for this year then this would be a great time to start. I promise you will be pleasantly surprised with the results you get by years end.

3) Because they lose focus and momentum then forget “why” they wanted to achieve their goals in the first place.

Quite surprisingly this is one of the biggest reasons why so many of us don’t hit some of our biggest life’s goals. We get sidetracked over the course of our year and “daily life” and unsuccessful habits both in thought and action seep into our routines.  This is a recipe for disaster and it happens to everyone. For this reason, having an accountability partner or coach to observe you and point out some of your blind spots should be an essential part of your business.

Masters of reality have pointed out “Nothing happens when we pay attention.” Meaning nothing happens that you’re not aware of when you’re paying attention. It takes enormous brain energy to pay complete attention to the present throughout our day. To have relentless focus on the “NOW” takes a relaxed yet aware mind.

One of the tricks from the master J. Krishnamurti is not to worry about trying to pay attention every moment, only be aware of those times when you drift off and bring your mind back to the present moment. This is, of course, easier said than done, but it will pay you massive dividends if you can pull it off on a daily basis. After a while it becomes a habit and gets rooted in your psyche.

I would like for all of us to have a massive year this year, hit all of our short-term goals and make a huge dent in our longer-term plans and inspiring intentions. As always, I want to hear from you and am expecting some good comments and questions if you’ve taken the time to read this far then you should take one more moment to leave a comment. Let me make it easy for you, if you were 100% certain that you would not fail then what would you attempt to do this year? Write you audacious goal below and that will be your first step in making your goal come to fruition. I double dare you  🙂
