Regain Your Footing

Nobody’s perfect, everyone makes mistakes from time to time, paradoxically so called experts can get a thing or two wrong even with all their data, experience, expertise, money and privilege.  The US Presidential Election is a case in point. How completely wrong were the data crunchers, pollsters and media when it came to making an accurate predication of this past election?

What about those ivy league Hedge Fund Managers with Billions to invest? Their returns have averaged a paltry 2 percent over the last three years. A simple 60% stocks 30% bonds index mix would have brought in 7.8% return over this same period while the overall returns of the  S & P 500 has been nearly 11%. It begs the question what have all these brilliant minds been doing all this time?

Turns out they are just as fallible as the rest of us, they’ve just got a slightly larger and possibly more privileged sphere of influence to cater to. They also have to get a check up from the neck up like the rest of us when they get things so completely wrong.

This brings me to a couple of questions:  Why do we so often put more trust and belief in highly trained professionals and institutions made up of these people without doing our own thinking and our own form of due diligence first?

Secondly, How many times do we have to make the same mistakes of trusting or believing in something or someone outside of ourselves rather than turning inside and trusting our own thoughts, gut instincts and abilities?

I would have to say that maybe now would be the best time for all of us to start working on the following 3 simple yet powerful points.

  1. Start doing our own thing and believing in our own thing and building our own thing.
  2. Stand by our own standards and hold ourselves accountable. Rely on our own instincts and use our intelligence and communication skills to get answers to the things we need to know.
  3. Start believing in ourselves and others can follow if they may. Resist the urge to beg people to follow us.  If what we’re doing requires more hands and brains then a steady show of our strength and “conviction in our mission” will undoubtedly encourage others and they will surely be intrigued enough to ask if they can join our cause. Start with our relentless self-motivation and let it grow from there.

By listening to yourself first and believing in your own voice and keeping these three points top of mind you’ll either be completely on your own or will end up having a fantastic team joining you. Either way you will proudly be a self-appointed member of the first hand human being experience and will by default become an inspirer to the second hand club of followers.

Who, by the way, is a club we all must join and move through from time to time. The key is not to get too comfortable in the followers club and end up staying there indefinitely. There’s simply no thrill or growth in that lesser realm.
