What is your cost of “Keeping Up Appearances?” Is it a direct measurable monetary cost? As in, you think you must live in a certain type of house or condominium in a certain neighborhood and drive a certain car or take a certain kind of expensive holiday? Or rather is it an immeasurable emotional and intellectual issue whereby you feel compelled to behave a certain way and associate with a certain type of person?
Regardless of your societal choices, I believe it’s important to maintain a certain amount of honest perspective when making daily decisions which eventually add up to … One Big Life’s Adventure.
If you haven’t already had a look at the above diagram please do so now and re-remind yourself of what you already know. Most of our daily thought time is spent on our own situations. We rarely spend time paying much attention to anyone else but ourselves and when we do think about others it’s usually more of a quick superficial kind of pondering. We might think about their work or their family life.
Over time we all eventually come to realize that most people have experienced an amazing life and usually have some “stranger than fiction” unbelievable stories to tell. And those that have the best stories are usually those that spent their lives going after what they felt was their highest value or what they thought would help them personally learn and grow. These people base their lives purely on adventure and personal challenges. They would sell any nice house or car they had in a minute to finance their next excursion. While others love living in their safe cocoons at work and at play and would never dream of taking any personal risk to their comfortable manicured life.
Ultimately, everyone is just doing their thing so please be sure you’re doing yours and make sure you are living as authentically and purposely as you possibly can. If you can say each day that you could die today and have “no regrets” then you’re certainly on the RIGHT PATH! Carry on and Sing Your Song!!
