Frustration – vs – Education

Don’t get frustrated, Get Smart! More often than not when we’re majorly frustrated were operating out of a “force things to happen mentality” -vs – “I wonder if there’s something I’m missing mind-set”?

Some questions you should ask yourself before freaking out:

  • Is there someone in my industry that might have a solution to my current issue?
  • What would an academic suggest?
  • Would a lawyer be able to help?
  • Is there something that a professional (creative) well trained accountant could suggest?
  • Is there an unused asset aka brain in my organization, network or neighbourhood?
  • What about my spouse or kids? Might they have another way at looking at my situation?

Failing this you should… Keep working…Be patient… Keep plugging away…Keep trying new approaches… And searching for new methods.

Never Give up! Never say die! Have Fun! Be persistent and watch things turn in your favour.

I have a strange habit of researching quotes that have inspired me over the years.  And  now with the help of massively improved search methods, I’ve been able to dethrone some wrongly attributed, yet famous quotes/passages.

I’ve always believed in the power of words to motivate, educate and inspire us to greater heights. Here’s one of my favorite yet wrongly attributed passages. I always gave Johann Wolfgang von Goethe credit for the following words and I’ve been repeating this to my sales team over the years. I’ve just discovered that these inspiring words are actually from William H. Murray, a Scottish Mountaineer. The following passage is from his book “The Scottish Himalayan Expedition”:

“Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth that ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favour all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed would have come his way. Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it. Begin it now.”

William Hutchison Murray

Once again, I must stress the importance of knowledge and not having an opinion where your good advice comes from. I’ve been learning reclaimed wisdom from my sons since they were born and how ironic that some of my most influential and inspiring quotes were attributed to the wrong author.

As it turns out, I probably would have more in common with William Murray as I’ve climbed a few mountains myself over the years. We would have had a much better conversation than me and the German Statesman/Academic/Poet ever could have.
