Creativity Cycles

Nature is rhythmic and it flows in cycles, so too does your creativity. Your job is not necessarily to keep trying to force yourself to come up with new ideas all the time but rather to notice your daily, weekly and monthly creative rhythms and make sure you have a system for capturing your ideas.

I try to have a notebook and pen by my bed just in case I wake up in the middle of a night with a crazy dream. Often I try to think of a problem that needs a creative solution just before I nod off in the evening in order to allow my delta waves to mull over a possible solution.

Most of us are rarely without our devices so any form of digital note taking can capture your brilliant bursts of creative ideas. The key is to make sure you have some sort of feedback mechanism to help your mind start to give shape, form and structure to your ideas.

“Everything has it’s beauty but not everyone sees it” – Andy Warhol

Flesh out your thoughts by writing, drawing or sharing with friends, family members and trusted colleagues. Don’t allow your critical self talk to get the better of you. Make sure you keep your creative juices flowing and believe in the value of your ideas. Know that we’re all creative and have a deep seeded need to express our individual thoughts and feelings with the rest of the world.

Some of your ideas will be good, some not so good, some will be incomplete while others will be perfect and absolute just the way they were originally expressed. The key to keeping your creativity alive is to first and foremost acknowledge that you in fact “ARE A CREATIVE!”

When would be the best time to start noticing and sharing your natural creativity?
