Beginning Anew

As 2016 comes to an end and 2017 starts anew; here’s some poignant questions that will help you clarify your must-do’s from your want-to’s for an amazing 2017.

Career/Business Questions:

  • What unfinished projects must I complete for sure “no matter what” in the coming year?
  • What new ideas do I want to pursue this year?
  • What projects shall I “officially” stop and put on hold for the coming year so I can have the focus and energy to finish at least one of my more important projects?
  • Who can I reach out to in my network that will inspire me, support me and hold me accountable in order to finish my “no matter what” projects in 2017?
  • Is what I’m doing now as a business or career helping me to get where I want to be 5 years from now? If not, then what is my justification for doing it?

Personal:

  • What personal accomplishments from 2016 am I most proud of?
  • What goals do I want to achieve for sure in 2017? And, what longer term goals can I promise to chip away at over the course of the new year?
  • What will make me feel successful when I look back over the course of the coming year and will be able to say to (myself, friends or colleagues) about my accomplishments at the beginning of 2018…

“Wow, I’m so proud and happy that I accomplished  _X_ last year, I didn’t think I had it in me to make  _X_ happen but I stuck at it and Whala! I really made it happen! I’m really glad I pushed myself out of my comfort zone last year. I feel like a new person.

There’s some conventional wisdom that states “if you can’t even be bothered to write down your goals then you probably can’t be bothered to do them” and my personal experience with conventional wisdom is that it’s born out of truth. It’s  a gift from past generations that made mistakes, learned from them and felt compelled to pass it on to their loved ones. The good stuff, valuable stuff sticks.

It still amazes me how many people don’t write down their yearly goals. Intelligent people that have tried every thing in their arsenal to succeed at life and business and yet when I ask them if they write down their goals or intentions they say… “Well, no but I’ve got it in my head” or “I know what I need to do. So, why should I write it down?”

I was once a part of that group. However, I was so dis-satisfied with not accomplishing my biggest intentions that I thought I would at least give it a try. That was in 1994 and I’ve been writing my yearly goals and intentions down ever since. (here’s a previous post explaining an important study concerning written goals)

I can safely say that I’m very happy I started writing them down because I’ve been able to hit nearly every goal I’ve written. Some goals have taken longer to reach, of course, so they get highlighted and transferred to the next year’s list. This process will keep going until either the goal gets reached, my priorities drastically change or I die. (in which case, personal goals may not be relevant)

It’s a simple and honest system that forces you to bring your heart, mind and soul together once a year.  The result of which brings the unmanifest into the physical world in it’s first manifest state, even if it’s just in the form of ink and paper. This small magical moment draws creative energy from the universe which starts gathering the ingredients you will need to begin to create your vision. We’ve got to start somewhere, heh?
